I think Mr. Regular got it wrong here, manual locking hubs just lock the hub to the axleshaft. Not the axleshaft a together, that's done in the differential. But who knows what people do to their cars, trucks.
Not sure when he talks about the hubs, but he does.

I think your right, doesn't locking hub make it so when you engage 4WD, the wheels lock to the half shaft coming from the differential so that the truck is not just spinning the front half-shafts and wasting half the power from the transfer case, because at that point, it would still be 2WD because the wheels are just rotating freely of the half shafts, my mercury mountaineer thats 4 years newer, has auto locking hubs.

that's correct...the whole reason for the locking hubs is to disengage the wheels from the axles, so when you're in 2wd the front wheels aren't eating into the fuel economy by spinning the axles, differential, and front driveshaft needlessly

Yeah, it's a fad. Some of the stuff he says is interesting, note sure if true or not, but I'm not going to fact check.
